Always start slowly and graduallybuild speed, force, and intensity.Always consult your doctor before starting a walking or otherexercise program, especially if you’re recovering from a recentinjury or surgery, or if you have a chronic condition. Adults should get 30 minutes or more of exercise at least 5 days aweek. Children should get 60 minutes or more of exercise each day. Always use proper gear. Replace your athletic shoes when they wearout. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that let you movefreely and are light enough to release your body heat. When youexercise in cold weather, dress in removable layers.Warm up to prepare your body for exercise. This will increase yourheart rate and blood flow, and loosen up muscles, tendons,ligaments, and joints.While stretching, move only until you reach a point of muscletension. Remember, stretching shouldn’t hurt! Inhale before youstretch and exhale as you release. This will help you release slowlyand maintain control. Take your time. Breathe regularly to help lower your bloodpressure and increase the blood supply to your brain.Drink water before, during, and after exercise. This will preventdehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.Make cooling down the final phase of your exercise routine. Itshould take twice as long as your warm up. Slow your motions andlessen the intensity at least 10 minutes before you stop completely.
